Carl Howelson was a top Norwegian ski jumper prior to immigrating to the United States in 1905. Much of his contribution was focused to the development of ski jumping in the United States. He was a ski jumping performer for the Ringling Brothers Circus for several years and also helped to organize the famous Norge Ski Club of Chicago.
The Class A national champion in 1921 he is best remembered for bringing skiing to Steamboat Springs in Colorado. Howelson Hill in Steamboat is named after him.
