Barbara Kidder-Lee was introduced to skiing and the enjoyment of the mountains by her father.  She started racing in 1940 and won the Alta Cup combined in 1945 beating many famous and well-known skiers.  In 1946 she won the Roch Cup and the NICA at Sun Valley while also finishing second at the Roch Cup.  She was recognized as the premier skier in the United States in 1946.

During her development as a skier she came into contact with Otto Schneibs and completely absorbed his philosophy that skiing is a way of life.
