Vernon Lamb was both a cross country and alpine skier at the Lake Placid High School and while attending M.I.T., Dartmouth and Syracuse Universities. He became a certified national alpine official, then a Nordic official, and a FIS jumping judge in 1970. He served as FIS Technical Delegate to Canada and Japan. He served as president of the Lake Placid Ski Club, delegate to 12 USSA conventions and attended three FIS Congresses.

He also served on numerous community and regional organizations that served well in his efforts to obtain all the environmental permits for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.
