Hermod Bakke competed for several years in the United States as a Class A ski jumper. He was also an excellent and competitive cross country skier.  However, he is best remembered for his unselfish devotion to ski jumping as a hands on hill designer and builder. He re-designed the big hill at Leavenworth, Washington and helped to design and build the hill at Government Camp, Colorado. At Leavenworth he served as hill captain or tournament chairman from 1932 through to 1969. Through his efforts, ski jumping progressed as a safe sport and he found satisfaction in creating great conditions for the competitors.
