Roy Mikkelsen immigrated to the United States in 1924 and soon thereafter joined the Norge Ski Club in Chicago.  As a ski jumper he held national titles in 1933 and 1935 and competed for his adopted country at the 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games.  He also became a strong alpine skier.

He fought for the famed Norwegian-American 99th Battalion during World War Two under General Paton's command.  

After moving to California he was active in civic affairs, a member of the Auburn Ski Club and one of the prime movers that successfully brought the Olympic Winter Games to Squaw Valley in 1960.
