Carroll Reed  (deceased)

Year Inducted: 2002

Born: October 9, 1905

Died: January 29, 1995

Carroll Reed got the idea to created a ski school after suffering a skiing accident in 1934.  He started the Eastern Slopes Ski School at Jackson, New Hampshire and lured Benno Rybizka away from the Hannes Schneider School in Austria to be his first ski instructor.

Rybizka arrived to find little snow and a small cadre of ski instructors who did not know how to ski.  Nevertheless he was able to make that first ski season a success, sufficiently that Harvey Dow Gibson hired him to be the ski school director for the new ski school at North Conway, New Hampshire.  These were the roots put down before the arrival of Hannes Schneider in 1939.

Reed went on to establish the Carroll Reed Ski Shops across the country.
