John "Snowshoe" Thompson was a legend in the mining camps of the California Sierras.  With skis that were 7.5 to 8 feet long he carried the mail over the snowy mountain passes between Placerville, CA and Genoa, NV from 1856 until his death in 1876.  He was a heroic figure of his day whose efforts maintained communications throughout this remote area and demonstrated a man's capability on skis under challenging conditions.
