Nelson Bennett enjoyed a 45-year career in the ski industry. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 1940, where he had been a member of its ski team, he moved to Sun Valley, Idaho and worked on trail maintenance and was a member of the ski patrol. He served with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy and after being discharged returned to Sun Valley to become Superintendent of Recreational Facilities. He became an F.I.S. technical delegate and, in 1960, took on responsibilities as general manager of the White Pass Ski Area in Yakima, Washington. He was the manager of the 1956 U.S. alpine ski team and the director of ski events at the 1960 Olympics. He also volunteered at the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid.
