Paul Valar, along with his wife Paula, who is also an Honored Member of the national Hall of Fame (Class of 1970), was a legendary figure in American skiing.

He toured the United States in 1947 and 1948 as a member of the Swiss national ski team and decided to immigrate in 1949.  He founded the Franconia Ski School and the Mittersill Ski School and with his wife operated three ski schools (including Sunapee) from 1954 to 1972.  At the same time they ran ski trips to Europe to promote skiing.   

Paul Valar was one of the incorporating members of the Professional Ski Instructors Association and co-authored in 1963, with Bill Lash, "Official American Ski Technique".  Possessing a keen interest in ski history he was the first president of the New England Ski Museum.
