Bill Berry's career as a ski journalist and historian spanned almost 5 decades. It took place during a time of great evolution and growth as he witnessed and recorded ski sport's development from the great era of ski jumping to the time when millions would be attracted to the slopes and mountainsides of America.

He was appointed to the National Ski Association's Historical Committee in 1938 and then served as the chairman of the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame's Selection Committee from 1966 through 1972. He played a large role in the collection of much of the historical material kept by the museum. A skier from the age of 6 he had been an active ski jumper from 1924 to 1945. In 1969, he was a recipient of the prestigious Blegen Award, the highest honor of the USSA.
